Need-To-Know Memo, Nov. 6

1) As the House hurdles towards its Saturday vote on health care reform, cracks are starting to show in support for the plan. While leaders are confident they will have the necessary 218 votes, some Democrats from Republican-leaning districts have issues with the bill's financing or stance on abortions (New York Times). Meanwhile, House minority whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., all but guaranteed no Republicans would vote for the bill (Roll Call -- subscription).

2) Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairwoman Rep. Nydia Velázquez, D-N,Y., warned that the members of her caucus will vote against the House health care bill if it includes language barring illegal immigrants from purchasing private health care. Though there is no language like that in the current bill, there has been discussion of adding an amendment similar to that in the Senate bill (Roll Call -- subscription).

3) President Obama has delayed a meeting with House Democrats until Saturday in an effort to rally support for the health care bill as close to the vote as possible (The Hill).

4) An estimated 10,000 conservative protesters stormed Capitol Hill in an attempt to turn wavering Democrats against the bill. Led by Rep. Michelle Bachman, R-Minn., the protesters chanted "kill the bill" and "stop Pelosi's madness" (Washington Post).

5) The Senate's opt-out public option continues to attract controversy, and its inclusion in a final bill is still up in the air. A number of Democrats, including Louisiana's Mary Landrieu and Nebraska's Ben Nelson have expressed misgivings about the plan. (CongressDailyAM -- subscription)
